Are you a Leader?
Before you answer this question see my definition below:
A Leader:
- Inspires to higher performance standards within his/her team
- Motivates his/her team to push on regardless the challenges
- Hugs and kicks his/her team everyday
- Manages tasks and relationships – both
Do you possess above attributes? If so, keep reading… If not, buy a Kotler book:)
The most important thing you can do as a leader is to evaluate your team… constantly. Follow the easy three steps below:
- See the people – Observe
- Feel the people – Understand
- Decide about the people – Plan
What any Leader has to understand is that honesty goes a long way in dealing with people! Practice honesty as often as you can because being honest in dealing with your team members is tough… but essential!
Can you do it? Perhaps… No one said being a leader is easy…!

As leaders, if we were honest with ourselves, and honest with our team, we would answer “not entirely” to your question. Since leadership is such a comprehensive skill, we too often miss the mark in our fundamental effort to deliver inspired, compassionate, strong, results-oriented leadership. Two of the pillars that hold us up as leaders, however, are credibility and accountability. We need to trust and be trusted. We need to take ownership of the situation, individual, team, department, company (or ship, platoon, squadron for us military types), and we must manage and face the consequences of the actions of our people and ourselves.
We have to work at this thing called leadership everyday so that we can answer the question “YES.”
